Product Description

ID: 053 An LP-Style Upgrade for two 4-wire humbucker pickup instruments

This is a special LP-Style upgrade that uses our T4-Switch, part of our growing family of of High Performance patented Pickup Switch UpgradeTM products. Once you install this upgrade product and connect your pickups, a HUGE alternate tone dimension of 68 pickup tones will instantly open up to you.

This product gives you the control over your pickup coils that a 3-way switch doesn't provide. You can control each of the four pickup coils individually or in combination. You can turn on just one coil for clean, crisp tones. You can put two or three pickups in either normal phase or reverse phase. And each of the pickups can be in a parallel circuit or a series circuit. This gives you incredible control over what your instrument sounds like. You can put your pickups in series and normal phase to get DuoBuckerTM pickup tones that are impossible to get with your stock instrument. With the pickups in series and in reverse phase, you get unique tones for rhythm playing, funky leads, and incredible glass-shattering piercing tones that you never thought possible.

This upgrade lets you can control all four pickup coils of your two 4-wire humbucker pickups (either separately, or combined) for:

  • on or off connections
  • normal-phase or reverse-phase connections
  • series or parallel connections

No production guitar exists that will give you this incredible range of jaw-dropping pickup tones.

You can optionally install our VT-3 Volume-Tone Control assembly (ID: 022) that will let you put all four pickup coils into series instantly get access to QuadraBuckerTM pickup tones that are so "fat", they are... Obese!

Upgrade Overview

This upgrade is for instruments with two 4-wire humbucker pickups, two volume controls and two tone controls.

After the upgrade, the 3-way switch on the upper horn will not be functional. You can either leave it intact so the guitar appears more "stock" or replace it with our long-life kill switch (see below).

Special Note: Our products do not support the following items:

  • Piezoelectric pickups
  • active (i.e., battery powered) pickups

Why You Should Upgrade

This high performance upgrade product will Give You Amazing Tones Without Changing Your Pickups. This is like an artist finding more colors of paint to work with.

Now you can get almost every pickup tone ever created on your upgraded guitar:
Blues, Jazz, Metal, Surf, Country, Glass-Shattering Tin-Canny, and dozens of pickup tones in between.

This upgrade will virtually give you the Signature Sound of every guitar god since the 1940s.

After you install this amazing Pickup Switch UpgradeTM product into your LP-Style guitar, you can pretty much duplicate the sound of most electric guitars, as well as give you single-coil or humbucker pickup tones! This simple upgrade product will give you several dozen new pickup tones that you have NEVER heard before.

In summary, this upgrade product will give you the ultimate "Holy Crap" experience!

What You Get

This is an upgrade for your LP-Style guitar that has three pickups and has two volume controls and two tone controls. This means that it can be also used to upgrade almost all LP-Style guitars (Gibson, Epiphone, PRS, etc.) that meet this requirement.

This upgrade uses our T4-Switch to give you 68 pickup tones. You also get a Parts Bag that includes everything you need to successfully complete the upgrade. You will be downloading the easy-to-follow installation instructions in PDF format from our website.

This upgrade product includes a laser cut trim plate as well as nautical grade stainless steel flat washers so your upgrade will look "professional." It also means you don't have to worry about this upgrade starting to rust after a few weeks of sweaty hand use.

Although surprisingly easy to install, we will rate the installation difficulty level at somewhere slightly less than intermediate. Working slowly, it will take you about 67 minutes to complete this upgrade. This upgrade product can be used in all LP-Style electric guitars that have three pickups as well as two volume controls and two tone controls.

Here are some things you should know about this newly-released upgrade product.

The difficulty level for installing this upgrade is intermediate. This means you don't need hand holding to install this upgrade.

You are OK with using a soldering iron, hand tools, an electric drill, ohmmeter, and can follow pictorial diagrams and schematics.

The lower set of Volume/Tone controls will be permanently removed. The remaining Volume/Tone control will be used to control all of your pickup coils. Simplicity is much better, don't you agree?

You are OK with drilling four holes in your guitar and slightly elongating the volume and tone control holes.

Piezoelectric pickups or active (i.e., battery powered) pickups cannot be used with this upgrade.

Your 3-way switch will not work after the upgrade. You can leave it there for aesthetic appearance to make it look "stock", replace it with our long-life kill switch, or just remove it and cover it with a metal or plastic hole plug that's your choice.

Upgrade Requirements

You are OK with using a soldering iron, electric drill and other hand tools; or you know a guitar technician that can install this upgrade for you. You will permanently remove the lower (i.e, bridge) volume and tone controls, drill four additional holes in your instrument to permit the mounting of our T4-Switch product. You will also minimally rewire the remaining Volume and Tone control, and making the needed connections to our T4-Switch product to get 68 pickup tones from your upgraded instrument.

Instruments That Can Be Upgraded

Instruments that can be upgraded with this product include (but is not limited to) all instruments with two 4-wire humbucker pickups.

Using The Upgrade

Here is how the switches of the T4-Switch product (when mounted) are laid out from rear to front:

(rear)  SW1  S5B  SW2  SW3  S5N  SW4  (front)

There are really two "groups" of switches:
    (S1B, S5B, S2B)         -and-         (S1N, S5N, S2N)
(control bridge coils)                     (control neck coils)

Here is how the switches are used:

Switches SW1, SW2, SW3 and SW4 are ON-OFF-ON switches used to turn an individual pickup coil Off and On. The middle position of each switch is Off. The down position turns the pickup On (in normal-phase) and the Up position turns the pickup On (in reverse-phase).

Switches S5B and S5N are ON-ON (a.k.a. ON-NONE-ON) switches that are used to put select pickup coils into a Series circuit when in the Up position. When Down, the select pickup coils are in a Parallel circuit. Pretty simple, don't you agree?

When switches S5B and S5N are in the Down position, you will get 29 different pickup tones from the various combinations of four pickup coils being Off or On (either in normal-phase or in reverse-phase) using switches S1B, S1N, S2B and S2N. These pickup tones are also due to the combination of pickup coils being in a Parallel circuit.

The other switches (S5B and S5N) are ON-ON (a.k.a. ON-NONE-ON) switches are used to put select pickup coils into a Series circuit. Here are two things you must remember when putting pickup coils into a Series circuit:

First, putting two pickup coils in Series circuit creates a "Compound" (i.e., Humbucker) pickup that gives you about 8 to 15 percent More output (think Heavy Metal/Jazz tone).

Second, because the pickup coils are in a Series circuit, BOTH of the affected pickup coils that are in a Series circuit MUST be On (either in normal-phase or reverse-phase). Any non-Series circuit pickup can be either Off or On (either in normal-phase or reverse-phase).

What Each Switch Controls

Switch SW1: Turns on Bridge south pickup coil #1 (down is normal-phase, up is reverse-phase, center is Off.)
Switch S5B: Puts both coils #1 and #2 into a Series circuit when Up. Both pickup coils MUST be On.
Switch SW2: Turns on Bridge north pickup coil #2 (down is normal-phase, up is reverse-phase, center is Off.)

Switch SW3: Turns on Neck south pickup coil #3 (down is normal-phase, up is reverse-phase, center is Off.)
Switch S5N: Puts both coils #3 and #4 into a Series circuit when Up. Both pickup coils MUST be On.
Switch SW4: Turns on Neck North pickup coil #4 (down is normal-phase, up is reverse-phase, center is Off.)

For this upgrade product, the various combinations of all of these switches will give you 68 pickup tones.

Other Information

Notes: Ask questions before purchasing. Purchaser assumes all risk of liability with respect to the installation and use of these products.

This switching system cannot be used with active (battery-powered) pickups or pizeo pickups.

Active (i.e., battery-powered) pickups manufactured by Bartolini, EMG, Seymour Duncan, etc. will not work with our growing family of high performance patented Pickup Switch UpgradeTM products. These active pickups use a design that prevents any of the pickups from being put into series because it sends -9VDC back to the first pickup, shorting out the circuit. Although some manufacturers now sell "add on" products to give you some of the functionality that our products automatically provide, this design limits their versatility and increases the cost to the musician. Many people who have tried these products remove them because they are "too sterile sounding". Anything that uses batteries will likely go dead at a crucial time - like when you're performing or in the recording studio. Bill Lawrence was right when he said, "Batteries belong in flashlights."
